‘Yes it’s fucking political’

Twitter took some offence to this….

‘The London riots are not about politics’

I agree: this was far, far from a protest march; there were no banners, there was no orderly shuffle through a designated route; this was not even a riot targeted destruction towards key corporations.  It was an ugly, destructive, near indiscriminate greed fuelled rage.

It was about power. and powerlessness.  And power is always political.  Abandon your party politics for a moment (we’re talking ‘small p’ politics here): …..power is always political.

It doesn’t take a detailed socio-economic critique to see certain patterns in who was rioting and where.  That these were not the members of our society with an inch of power.   This does not mean that being poor inevitably leads to criminality.  We’re losing our ability for nuance and complexity here – but poverty in collaboration with hopelessness, envy, lack of education, racism, alienation THEN placed in close conjunction with a dominant culture of capitalistic aspiration, which is creaking under the weight of itself, which is failing, whilst pretending it is not failing, produces behaviour which is not in anyway acceptable, but also not in anyway surprising.

So maybe what’s been ‘revealed’ is the levels of desperation, powerlessness, simmering resentment and hatred amongst certain sections of this society’s young.  Who were not part of the communities they were attacking.

And so we either roll out the hate,  sneer at the ‘chavs’, ‘the yobs’, the ‘scum’. We expel them further. Or we admit to ourselves that we have bred this problem; that they are part of us.  That Thatcher was wrong, that society does exist beyond the needs of the individual.  And then we do something different.

And I hope to God, we can do something different. Something better.
